Joyful people practice gratefulness

Joyful people practice gratefulness

I don’t usually watch TV but I love Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. I remember when she had a guest on,

Dr. Brene Brown.

Dr. Brown had written a book about all of her research on gratefulness. She explained that the most joyful people practice gratefulness, and just like that it was an Oprah light bulb moment for me.

See I know this to be true, I have found joy and peace in my life that I have never had before. The one thing about having it is that I am so very grateful, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t give thanks for where I am now. Every day, I give the credit to God and there are times that I am so very grateful it will literally bring me to tears. Gratefulness overcomes me every day and I can’t say it enough times.

I was in a dark place for many years and I knew that in order to change I had to change my outlook on life, so I started writing a gratitude journal. At first it was hard, I hated my life and there was nothing I was grateful for except my girls. Eventually I started small, like just being grateful for my girls, I found something to be grateful for.

You need to go through the day looking for things to be grateful for. Be grateful for the small moments, having dinner with your kids, a warm breeze, the sunrise, a kind word from someone. It’s okay to start small if you feel you can’t be grateful for everything, you must learn to crawl before you walk.

Gratitude is a practiced thing, we need to do this all the time. To learn to be grateful for ordinary moments. Be present in them, enjoy that very second, don’t ask when will the other shoe drop, just feel blessed at that moment.

So this is what Dr.Brown spoke about in her book about gratitude:

You must be a wholehearted person who is cultivating authenticity, letting go of what people think.

You must no longer care what people say.

I know that I wore a mask for too many years pretending to be someone else, I am now happy with myself, God is happy with me, and that’s all that matters.

We need to cultivate self compassion, we need to let go of perfectionism.

I tried for years to be perfect and it literally almost killed me. There is no such thing as perfectionism, you’re human, you have flaws, we all have flaws and it’s okay.

We need to cultivate a resilient spirit, we need to let go of powerlessness.

Yes, you will fall down, but get back up, be resilient. It’s okay, I write about my failures each and every day, yet I still keep going with a positive attitude.

We need to cultivate gratitude and joy. We need to let go of scarcity and fear.

This was a big one for me, fear ruled my life, I didn’t like change. I stayed 24 years in a horrible situation because of fear. When you give it over to God, to the universe or to whoever you believe in and trust, it is then you can find peace and joy in your life.

You can’t find joy when you’re trying to beat it to the finish line by saying oh when is the next shoe going to drop? This is too good, something bad will happen. No, live in this moment, let go of fear, have faith.

So today my friends, practice gratitude, start when you wake up, be thankful that you woke up. Be thankful that you can walk to the bathroom, be thankful that you have a home and hot water, that you have something to eat because not everyone has these things. Start a small practice every day and before long you will be grateful for everything you have. You will be thankful for every moment in your life, you will truly lead a blessed life not because of what you have or not have but because you are grateful for everything, in every moment.
