Being back home

Being back home

So if you follow me you know I grew up in upstate New York. I love the mountains, streams, lakes and the whole outdoorsy way of life back home.
I would move back to New York in a heartbeat if they got global warming and had no more winters.

But since I hate the cold and cannot yet afford to be a snowbird, I am stuck settling for my yearly summer 10 day vacation here. Being home, grounds me and soothes my soul. Being around family and friends reminds me of where I come from and who I am. It makes me grateful for how far I’ve come and who was with me along the way and continues to be with me.

Home has so many amazing memories for me, of camping, hiking, shooting guns, motorcycle riding, and many bonfires with friends, laughing and drinking.
Many firsts took place in my hometown, first kiss, first love, first time learning to drive, so many firsts were here and I am so grateful for that. I have lifelong friends, and lifelong memories here.

Yes, I know it’s not the same town as it was when I grew up here. Lots of things have changed and lots of people have moved on. Some friends who left asked why I would want to go back.
I wouldn’t be who I am without this place and these memories. Even though I have many painful memories that happened here, I cannot run away from them. I needed to face them head on, to learn the lessons and be at peace with the choices I have made. For me this place is a reflection of how far I’ve come and where my roots are that made me strong enough to deal with everything that happened to me.

So today my friends I am here to tell you that being back home means something different to everyone. Some people want to leave and never look back. Some people have wonderful childhood memories of their hometowns and some people like me realize that all the good and even the bad, make you who you are and it gives you peace with what happened in the past.
We are the ones that can still see the rainbow through the clouds being back home.
