The girlfriend who didn’t exist

Matoe Teo and the girlfriend who didn’t exist

So I watched this documentary about Matoe Te’o, a college football athlete who was going to get drafted into the major leagues. Everyone heard about his story when it became national news. His grandmother and girlfriend died within hours of his major game as he played with Notre Dam in the college finals. He played that game even though his heart was breaking.

He showed courage right as he reached the peak of his college football career with the Fighting Irish in 2012. The documentary told the complete story of how Te’o’s supposed girlfriend, “Lennay Kekua,” didn’t actually exist and the media firestorm that the story generated at the time.

Te’o was already a standout linebacker at Notre Dame in his senior year when he announced publicly that “his girlfriend” Kekua had died of leukemia, just hours after his grandmother died in September 2012. The world watched his courage and later condemned him for his native.

There were also interviews in this documentary with Naya Tuiasosopo — who had gone by Lennay Kekua with Te’o — where she shares that she is a transgender woman and why they did what they did.

Being single for so long I know a lot of catfishing and how many people pretend to be other people. I can definitely relate to how Teo fell for this. So many people blamed him saying he should have known but these scammers are good. They say what you want to hear, they prey on others feelings and the goodness of their hearts. This scammer ruined this young man’s life and made him a laughing stock to the world.

His life will never be the same because of how this person took advantage of him. Yet the media tore him apart after placing him on a pedestal not long before that.

So today my friends remember some of us look for and believe the good in people and some people look to use that to their benefit. We must not judge those that are caught in the lies of others who obviously have no life or have no conscience about hurting others.

Just because a person believes in another’s lies doesn’t mean they should be exploited.

My wish for this young man is that he can move on with his life and that others can realize how much their actions can cause pain to others.
