Making mistakes in our youth
So while watching this new Netflix documentary called
High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule.
Which was about Michaella McCollum who was arrested for smuggling cocaine.
Michaella McCollum offers a first-hand account of her shocking journey through the illicit world of drug trafficking. It was about this 20 year old who ran away from her small farming town in Ireland to Ibiza. There she met a few other girls and started partying every night. She was having the time of her life, life was good, she was young, beautiful and living life large. But reality kicked in and she realized that in order for her to stay she would have to get a job and so she did. Of course it was at a club serving drinks but this club also offered cocaine on their menu.
Shocked at first, as she didn’t know this existed, especially at a club but soon she realized that the money was great doing this. And the more money she could make, the longer she could stay there.
I especially know what a slippery slope that can be and yes, she slid right down that slope. Of course, she met a good looking guy that she hit it off with and he promised her that he could make her some quick money. We’ve all been there sweet talked into something, looking to make that quick buck, not wanting to have to go back home. Sometimes we do stupid things, and she definitely did.
Any dealer knows that you can’t get high on your own supply but when you’re young and come from a sheltered world, you don’t know this. Getting high, partying every night and falling for this good looking guy can definitely screw with your senses. He talked her into flying to another country with another young girl to bring back some cocaine.
Whether she knew how much or if she really wanted to get out but was too afraid we will never know the truth.
But she went through with it and she eventually got caught with 1 million dollars worth of cocaine in Peru.
When she knew that she could be spending 15 years behind bars, McCollum and Reid spilled the beans about their culpability, netting them reduced sentences of six years and eight months.
She is out now and a mother of two and yes, she regrets her actions. I know how she feels about doing things that I regretted in my past. I get it. We have all done things that we regret, things that we would never dream of doing with the time and knowledge we have now.
But I also know that I am no longer that person anymore, I have learned, I have grown and I am definitely not that stupid anymore. I wouldn’t want people to judge me on things I did when I was 20, please we were all stupid back then.
So today my friends remember we all make mistakes, we have all done things in our youth that we shake our heads at now, saying what was I thinking?
Sometimes our actions have very serious consequences and hopefully we will learn from these mistakes and grow into wiser people. You are not your past.
We can all change and we can all be the change we want to see.
