Preparing for the future

Preparing for the future

So I know this is a subject that most of us don’t like to talk about. We think that we’re gonna live forever or that we have more time but none of us are given a specific amount of time here. We don’t know when it will be our time to go. If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that life is unpredictable. You never know what’s going to happen.

Seriously, who would have ever thought the world would have closed down or that so many people would have died so suddenly?
I know for me personally, I would have never thought that I would lose my best friend a week after his 19th birthday or that his brother would die a year later. That my strong, healthy dad would be dead at 45 years old. Or that my church husband would die after he just found out he had cancer and they took it all out.
You just don’t know, and we must be prepared.

We need to talk about this, about your wishes, about who and where you want your assets to go.
Look at Chadwick Boseman, he was in his prime, and poof he got cancer and was gone just like that. He didn’t have a will and unfortunately, the state got almost half of his estate because of it.

For this reason you need these things:

1. A living will to let others know if you want to be kept on life support.

2.You need a dying wish contract that you can make, stating if you want to be buried or cremated.

3. You need a will especially if you have children, stating where you want your children to go, or who gets what. Even if it’s just for your personal items.

4. If you have bank accounts, put your children’s names on them so it will be easy for them to access them after you are gone.

5. Let them know if you are an organ donor, you won’t believe how many people you will help by doing that. It’s the ultimate gift of your life.

6. You need life insurance even if it’s a small policy enough to bury you with. There’s nothing worse than a go fund me account trying to raise money last minute for these things.

And all of these things you can write up yourself and just have notarized.

I have all of these things in place. Everything is in my girl’s name. They know I want to be cremated and that I want my ashes spread half by the ocean and half in the mountains where I grew up. I want a party on the beach complete with Jamaican food, lots of music, and tequila. I want them to tell funny stories about me and celebrate my life as much as I did.

I have given instructions on my favorite jewelry to be given to specific friends and family. All of this is spelled out so there will be no fights after I am gone. I refuse to put my children through courts or have the government take what I worked so hard for.

So today my friends remember, we are all going to go, all of us. So let’s be prepared, we need to talk about our wishes now. Don’t make your family suffer more than they will. Give them one last gift from you, a gift of peace and your last wishes.
