Why fast?

This is a question a lot of people seem to be asking me when I tell them I am fasting. Why are you fasting? For us as a church, it is to be able to give back to God and to bring us closer to him. To be able to open us up to hearing his voice and the things he wants from us in the upcoming year.

I was asked last night “Come on, why can’t you eat sweet potato pie, it’s made with sweet potatoes?” Or “Who says you can’t watch TV or listen to the radio?”

It’s not about people telling me what to do, because if you know me or read my blog, trust and believe, no one is telling me anything, I am hard headed. See what he didn’t understand is that I want to do this, this is a special time between me and God. This time is to show him what he means in my life, and how grateful I am for all he has done for me and to start this year showing him that he comes first.

So giving up on food, TV, social media or other things, it is a way that is free of distractions, so that I can see and hear God clearly.
Look at the amount of time that is allotted by God to us each day and what do we do with that time?

Are we reading the word? Listening to God’s word?
No, we have time to play games on our phones, check social media, watch Tv or text our friends but where is God’s time?

So during this time we take away our distractions so we can fill our minds with only God. We know that fasting is all through the bible “Even now return to me with fasting”

We need to realize that we need to make a change, we need to make an impact in our community, in others’ lives. God wants us to make an impact. We need to change, to take stock in what we’ve done and what we are going to do. This prepares us for what God wants for us, what he has for us.

In the bible it says certain things will only happen with fasting and I will tell you there is nothing more fulfilling than declaring your faith, as It is a personal decision to follow Jesus. We are here to ask for his help, we are here giving our lives over to God.

So there are 4 things we need to do in our fatih walk:

1.Our number one priority is to please God.

2. To worship him.

3. To live a successful faith walk.

4. And to wait for the second coming of Jesus.

These are the things we need to do to be successful in our faith walk. Do not be afraid of what you believe in, tell others who you follow. You must make a decision to say you follow Jesus.You may be persecuted for you decision, you may be criticized, mocked and put down or hear people say “Come on, eat that pie” but you need to stay on your path.

The problem with us as humans is that we love because of…
But he loves despite of…

Despite the fact you screwed up yet again.

Despite the fact you give him little or no time.

Despite the fact you turned your back on him and his word.

He loves you despite the fact that you don’t deserve it.
In the bible it mentions love 310 times. Agape love is what he preaches, we need to live out our lives in agape love.

We need to realize that we all bleed red, that we will all be going in the ground and we will not be taking anything with us. That all that we acquired here on earth, that you thought meant so much, that gave you such “status” will be gone when we die. What will matter is what we did while we were here. Who we helped, who we loved,who’s life we touched, then we will know if we lived in God’s word.

We sometimes forget what is truly important in life. We want to keep up with the Jones, whoever the hell they are. We act as if we deserve it, if it’s owed to us yet we do nothing to give back to God who gave us our very life.

So today my friends, this is why I fast, this is my gift to God for all he’s done and continues to do.I will leave you with one of my favorite songs Alabaster box:
