Disclosure…the life of Trans people
So I recently watched the Netflix documentary Disclosure. It was about real-life stories of Trans people and what they’ve been through and how they are despised on television shows and in movies. They say that more than 80% of people do not know a Trans person in real life and so any ideas they get are from the media.
I can’t imagine living your life feeling like you’re born into the wrong body. How horrible it would be that people make fun of you and the only thing that the media shows is how you’re a sex worker or a violent criminal. Not seeing what it really is like and what they go through. That these are real people with real feelings dealing with a world that hates them only for wanting to be who they are.
But I ask you, why do we judge people so quickly based on the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, or who they know they are on the inside?
We don’t know anything about how they feel or what they go through.
Yet we are so quick to judge.
Why do we allow the media to degrade others who are not like us?
There was a quote in the film that said “For a long time I was afraid to be who I am because I was taught by my parents that there’s something wrong with someone like me”
There is nothing wrong with being who you are, but there is something wrong when we as a society try to fit everyone into the box we want them to be in.
So today my friends remember that for anyone to be afraid of who they are, is sad. We must learn compassion for those who are different. We must stand with them and change the way they are shown in the media. We must learn to accept people who are different from us and teach our children that it’s okay to be different.
After all, is said and done, we all bleed red, we all have feelings and we all just want to be who we truly are.
Just be kind.
