The first step is admitting you have a problem

The 1st step is to admit you have a problem

This week I’ve written about a different kind of therapy and I know that in AA that’s the 1st step they teach us. You first have to admit you have to have a problem in order to get the help you need. This is just not for people with addictions, this is for people that need help with any part of their life.

So many times we see people on social media with the perfect life, because that is what people show us and so we think our lives must not be that good compared to others. We do not see people fall down or fail or that people have problems with depression or anxiety because we hide that.
It is so hard to admit that you are having a problem and so many people hide it and think they could deal with it.

I don’t know why mental health issues are such a taboo in this country, especially for black men. They were taught that as most of us suck it up, put your big girl panties on and keep going, and don’t let anyone know what you’re going through. They refuse to get help as they think that they will look weak or care what others will think. But hiding or pretending there isn’t a problem is just masking the problem, not fixing the problem or admitting to the problem that you have.
There is nothing weak about admitting that you need help because, at one point in our lives or another, we all need help.

If we don’t admit we have a problem we will never address it. We will cover it up with drugs, shopping, or other toxic behavior to mask the pain. But eventually, the problem will creep up in other areas of our lives if we don’t admit that we are struggling.

So today my friends, I am here to tell you that the first step to healing is to admit you have a problem. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed because we all face issues. We all fail or fall down but only the strongest will admit that they need help. And in admitting that, you will be able to heal and grow into the person you are meant to be. Admitting you need help is the first step, take that step and be the change you want to see.
