Women rights Being violated around the world Part 2
I have to tell you that while researching for this blog I was shocked by the numbers out there.
Today 200 million women worldwide are living with female genital cutting / mutilation. As bad as it sounds, it is even worse than you can imagine. This isn’t a surgery, no this is a down right gruesome mutilation, that includes many health risks, including haemorrhage, infertility, ongoing severe pelvic pain, complications in childbirth, HIV, psychological trauma and death.
Yet this still goes on in many countries.
Many countries fail to protect their rape victims, and even worst other countries such as Morocco and Saudi Arabia have much stricter punishments. As if you hadn’t been through enough, they victimized the victims but again in these countries, women have little to no rights. Rape victims in these countries can be charged with crimes for being “alone with an unrelated man, or for getting pregnant afterwards,” only further perpetuating the damaging notion of rape culture there.
In Yemen, it is against the law for a woman to leave the house without her husband’s permission. Many women stay as they are afraid of the legal ramifications.
Here’s a startling fact:
Did you know that women currently make up two-thirds of the world’s illiterate adults? They are kept home to run the house which includes cooking, cleaning and all household chores without a peep from them. When it’s time to get married, their father will let them know and choose the man she will marry.
We think that could never happen to us, but once we start taking away our rights, especially our rights to our bodies, then anything and everything is on the table to take next.
We must fight for everyone’s rights, whether they are your rights, whether you don’t agree with it, because we all, every single one of us are entitled to be free. Because you never know if your rights are going to be next.
