One person’s kindness could change a person’s life
We never know what a person is going through. You never know how the things you do or say could change their lives.
I remember a few years ago when a person reached out to me on Facebook and messaged me that he wanted to thank me for being so kind to him in high school.
I was shocked, I couldn’t imagine what I had done. He went on to say he was in an abusive home and just moved to our town. It was his first day at school and I introduced myself and asked him to sit at our lunch table.
My best friend would always yell at me for inviting strangers to our table. He would say “What are you, the Aspca? Taking in all these strays?” Even though I didn’t know what it was like to be the new kid, I could still feel for them.
Well, he went on to say he was at a point where he wanted to kill himself and my kindness gave him hope about the world. Thirty something years later this man remembered a small act of kindness I did for him. It blew me away as I had no idea, I was just being me.
See we have no idea how we can say or do something to change someone else’s life forever. I know there are many teachers out there who have done this for children. A dear friend of mine also had a horrible life growing up and this one teacher was there for her. She was lucky as she lived in a small town with one school from elementary to high school.
This teacher was her rock, she would have breakfast and lunch with her. She was there for my friend, encouraging her all the way. She believed in her so much, even to the point of filling out all of her college applications. She got in with a full ride because of this teacher. She told me she wouldn’t have survived without her.
Years later she found out this woman was sick and alone and she moved her into her home and took care of her until she died. That’s love. That is a person that has changed your life, and it doesn’t matter if they are blood or not.
So today my friends remember as you are in line, with a coworker, or a service worker, just be kind. You never know how far your kind words or gestures may go in their life. We don’t know what a person is going through, what their smile may be hiding, so just be kind. And maybe just maybe if you are so lucky, one day you’ll realize what a difference your kind deeds have made in someone’s life.
